Shlonsky, Avraham
(1900-73)
   Israeli poet. He was born in Karyokov, in the Ukraine. He settled in Palestine in 1921, and in 1928 joined the staff of the newspaper Ha-Aretz. In 1943 he joined the editorial staff of the journal Mishmar, and subsequently edited the quarterly Orlogin. Associated with the Mapam party, he partici-pated in the activities of the international world peace movement of the 1950s. From the 1950s he criticized the Soviet attitude to Israel and Jewish culture in the USSR. In addition to writing poetry, he translated classics from several languages into Hebrew.
